   UTG Install

If this is a new install (you have never had Shift4) or your Shift4 install hasn't been updated in years, you MUST run this program for credit card number masking, MENUS4MK.
You must run this program to properly mask existing card numbers and prevent entry of unmasked card numbers in the future. It's run using Run Program By Name

Shift4 Universal Transaction Gateway (UTG)

https://support.shift4.com/hc/en-us/sections/360007172774-Universal-Transaction-Gateway-UTG-

Quoted from Shift4's UTG Installation and Configuration Guide:

"The Universal Transaction Gateway® (UTG®) encrypts and securely transmits transaction data from interfaced merchant systems (POS, property management, eCommerce shopping cart, etc.) directly to Lighthouse Transaction Manager using Shift4’s proprietary Derived Unique Key Per Transaction with Moving Target Encryption (DUKPT w/MTE)."

The Shift4 UTG will be installed by a representative at the property (usually a manager or IT professional) and a Shift4 representative. This usually needs to be scheduled a few days in advance, so contact Shift4 support as soon as possible. https://www.shift4.com/support

Shift4 UTG Service Installation

There are a few things to consider when installing the UTG (Universal Transaction Gateway):

  • Each computer where the UTG is installed must have a static IP address. This is because the Execu/Tech software needs to know which computer to communicate with.

  • In situations where the UTG is installed on each computer with a PIN Pad, we will need the IP address and the port number for each UTG installation.

If a single Shift4 UTG will be installed at your location.
  • This is reliable and works great if you take these precautions.

  • Install the UTG on a reliable computer that will always be on.
If this computer is turned off your card processing will stop working.

  • This computer should not be regularly used by employees.
Every time someone uses this computer the chances of a problem causing service interruptions increases.

  • This computer should NEVER be used for personal tasks like email, web browsing, entertainment, etc.
This is how computers get a virus, malware, ransomware, etc.

  • All employees should know about this computer and know that it must be on for credit card functions to work.
Please label this computer so it's easy to find. This will help expedite the resolution of any service interruptions.

  • It's OK to install the UTG on the same server the Execu/Tech software.
*Since the UTG must be installed locally, this doesn't apply to Cloud Hosted customers or customers hosting on their own servers outside of the local network.

Be sure that the TcpHost API interface is installed.

Once this is done, Execu/Tech Systems should be contacted and provided with:

  • The IP address (Host Address) of each UTG install and
  • The corresponding API Terminal ID of all PIN Pads using each UTG install.
Configuring the API Terminal ID is explained here Shift4 EMV Setup
